Mrs. du Toit
From: Mrs. du Toit Weblog

It was a very long ride, but we got home yesterday.  It was one of those everything that could go wrong sort of things, but not really.  The pain meds had warn off, everything at home is lower than at the hospital, and they don’t have those nice handles to pull yourself up on anything.

I’m afraid I scared the daylights out of the boys with my first shriek of agony.  David asked me later if I intended to do that again.  I hadn’t planned to do it that time, so I assured him that doing it again is not in my plans in the slightest.  As anyone who has had surgery will attest, there are spots that you dare not go--positions that you try to avoid or somehow skirt around.  In the hospital I’d figured out how to get in and out of the hospital bed by sitting on my foot.  That allowed me to lower into the bed rather than relying on my stomach to lie back.

I’m gradually figuring out how to do all that at home.

But I’m home, which is miraculous.  I’m also glad I spent the last weekend driving every one nuts, finishing up DIY projects so things would be closer to organized when I got home.  Stepping around things would not have been a good idea.

I have not had reflux once.  It is amazing.  Of course the wounds hurt like hell, but that’s to be expected.  It is in no way compared to Surgery #1 that was traditional open surgery, when I couldn’t move my toes for 4 days with screaming.  Laporoscopic makes all the difference in the world.  I’ve been up and walking (not fast, mind you) since the day of surgery.  I resting on my back in the hospital for 3 days, without any reflux at all.  I haven’t been on my back for more than 30 minutes without GERD, in 10 years, so this is all kinda weird and wonderful.

So, even though I’m still doing the Tim Conway little old man walk, it was worth it, this early in the game.
