  1. *Laughs* Ah, the truth and facts. What you say is true. But, the fact is, my proselyte upbringing leads me to go after all comers. (Must convert the un-repentant.) I hope the rest of your readers take to heart these pearls. :p

  3. Damn!

I never fall into a clean category. confused

What about those at point 1.5:
Did NOT grow up around guns, had parents who were not supportive of same, but managed to fire a bolt action .22 at Y camp in the third grade (a whole ten rounds!).

I know I want to arm the family, finding the funds is another matter.

  5. Similar to 1.5, there’s another group who intellectually agree with the 2nd Amendment, but for whatever reason have never acted on that agreement.  I know this group exists because I was one; and, I know this group is reachable because Kim’s blogging was one thing that got me to act.  I don’t claim to be a Rifleman, yet, but I do now own several guns and go shooting with them from time to time.

  7. I rather suspect that the best way of converting door 3s into door 2s is not by spending time trying to convince them that guns are OK really, but by creating a large number of door 1s. The door 3s will be educated by immersion.

  9. Yep.  I looked at it as nibbling at the margins.  Going to straight to the heart of the opposition may make for good debate, but it doesn’t win any converts.

  11. Quite so. Group 1, with an option on Group 2, is the way to go.

You in the US at least have Group 1, a truly precious advantage.

In the UK, for historical reasons we had to try for Group 2, because we were few, Group 1 was so small and, mostly, already in the net.

When it came to the Great Confiscations, first of self-loading military calibre rifles, then of handguns, we were electorally insignificant, so we were easily shafted.

I have said it before, many times here and elsewhere. Every shooter should make it his or her business to take someone new to the range once a year, whether or not the guest sticks with it. Expand the constituency. If you don’t gain a participant, you should have at least a sympathiser after the fired cases are picked up.

Look for Group 1 and 2 types, and waste no effort on Group 3 unless the person promotes himself to Group 2.

  13. If by osmosis someone in Group 3 begins to reconsider, that will be because you weren’t trying to beat their opinions out of them by belittling them, or talking down to them.  It will be because you demonstrate that your opinions were made by carefully reviewing the facts and evidence, not based on knee-jerk reactions.

    That counts and is important.

There are many folks on Kim’s site who were behind Door #2 when they first started reading him, but he wasn’t (necessarily) directing his message or any message to them.  He shared what he believed, backed up by facts/evidence, and that resonated with folks who come to conclusions the same way.

  15. red face

But the guys from behind Door #3 jump out and shout at you.  They’re much easier to find than the guys behind Door #1.

But I’ll start trying to be more careful with my time.

  17. Professor: You have just a 5% chance of succeeding. What sort of people even try at such odds?

People who are accepting bribes from the printing company? ...and anyone who sends blanket advertising to the masses.  5% would be a miraculous return.  It’s actually .0005%.

It is a concept that comes up all the time.  People who engage in failed marketing schemes and who view it as a challenge, instead of a goal, with incremental steps.  Their ego is involved, not their passion for a cause.  They’re putting their ego above the goal.  Nothing heroic about that at all.

Ask anyone who has spent money trying to convert a Coke drinker to switch to Pepsi.  It’s futile.  For 1/15th the money, you can convert the non-loyal to switch.  For 1/50th of the money, you can get Coke drinkers to buy another 6 pack and you’ve doubled your sales… and you’ve rewarded your loyal customers instead of rewarding those who don’t give a damn.

Why spend money/time on those who aren’t interested when there are so many worthy of your time?

It’s like triage.  While you’re saving the 5 with the worst, most fatal injuries, 95 others just died that you could have saved.  The heroic doctor may get thanked by the one he saved and feel oh-so-wonderful and puffy chested, but it was achieved at the expense of the unnecessary grief of the others.
