As I read, I thought, “What’s wrong with that ensemble?”
But I have to agree with the aspect of respecting the people you love. I hadn’t thought of that one before.
Clothing can be an interesting issue. My son is a Boy Scout, and once in a store, he was behaving in a way I thought did not best represent Scouts. I told him to curb his behavior, or I’d take the shirt. He didn’t believe me. He spent the rest of that trip bare from the waist up, but he never acted poorly in uniform again.
We don’t do the playing one parent against the other thing either. I tend to go pretty far the other way from what they wanted when they try that. I’d have put mine in dress shoes, slacks, white button-down, and a tie after that stunt.
Parenting should be fun.

When I catch my three year old daughter playing the “play the parents off against each other” I have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing or smiling as I properly scold her for pulling that stunt.
My wife and I wait until she is out of earshot before we break into laughter.
Parenting is fun.

Can’t wear sandals with a jacket? At his age, circa 1970, I used to wear sandals with a heavy winter coat in the snow. Does that mean I’m autistic? I swear, sometimes I think David is the member of your family with whom I most identify.
The attempt to play parents off against each other, however, must be nipped in the bud whenever it crops up.

Nope, sandals and coats are a no-no, as are stripes with paisley (or any mixed prints/patterns), brown with blue, black with brown, wool in summer, linen in winter, etc. etc.

My Salesian fathers and brothers wore sandals with everything. All year round. Franciscans and Capuchins sometimes still do.
I did so myself, for a while. One year, nothing but sandals. When someone says “my feet are freezing” i usually giggle, knowing what that’s REALLY like.og | 11/9/2007 04:15 PM CDT -
Love your visual representations of your family interactions. The second one represents me well too when I discover that a child is trying to play me off against my wife. I’ll have to remember the part of “respecting those you love” next time one of our kids tries to go out inappropriately dressed.
Never knew you had an autistic son. I have an autistic adult daughter who, unfortunately, has estranged herself from our family. Had to fight a lot of battles similar to yours with her while growing up.

He’s actually wearing a coat? When I was 19 I usually wore a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers until the mercury was in single digits. All that blubber serves the same function for me as it does for the Walrus...Koo-koo-ki-choo! 8-)
